SIGMA Launches 35mm F1.4 DG II Art Lens

ShutterCount 3 Mins Read

Sigma has officially unveiled the 35mm F1.4 DG II Art, a refreshed take on its flagship wide‑angle prime that first defined the Art series in 2012. Announced this week, the new lens arrives as a successor to the 2021 DG DN model, offering a slimmer, lighter design alongside improvements in optical performance and autofocus speed.

In a market crowded with fast 35mm options from Sony and other manufacturers, Sigma positions the DG II Art as a compelling choice for mirrorless shooters who value portability without giving up the sharpness and rendering the Art line is known for. The lens is aimed squarely at street, portrait, and environmental photography, where a bright aperture and balanced handling are especially important.

Refined design and handling

Compared to its predecessor, the 35mm F1.4 DG II Art is noticeably more compact, shedding roughly 20 percent of its weight and 14 percent of its length. This reduction improves balance on modern full‑frame mirrorless bodies such as Sony’s A7 series and Panasonic’s Lumix S cameras.

Despite the smaller footprint, the build remains robust. The lens features dust‑ and splash‑resistant sealing along with a fluorine coating on the front element to resist smudges and moisture. Handling has also been refined, with an aperture ring that supports both clicked and de‑clicked operation, a lock switch to prevent accidental adjustments, and dual customizable AFL buttons for quick access to focus functions.

Optical performance and close‑focus capability

Sigma describes this as its best 35mm F1.4 to date, thanks to a redesigned optical formula consisting of 15 elements in 12 groups, including two Special Low Dispersion elements and four aspherical elements. The design aims to suppress aberrations and deliver consistent edge‑to‑edge sharpness, even when shooting wide open.

An 11‑blade rounded diaphragm contributes to smooth background blur, while improved coma control makes the lens suitable for night scenes and astrophotography. The floating focus system supports consistent performance across focusing distances and enables a minimum focusing distance of 28cm, achieving a 1:5.4 maximum magnification for close‑up compositions.

Autofocus and video considerations

Autofocus is driven by dual High‑response Linear Actuators, delivering faster and quieter operation that Sigma says rivals native lenses from Sony and Leica. Early impressions suggest reliable subject tracking for both stills and video, with reduced focus breathing benefiting video creators who rely on smooth focus transitions.

The lens does not include optical image stabilization, instead relying on in‑body stabilization available on modern mirrorless cameras. Combined with the bright F1.4 aperture, this setup remains well suited for low‑light shooting.

Pricing and availability

The Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG II Art is priced at $1059, reflecting a modest increase over its predecessor in exchange for the updated design and performance improvements. The lens is scheduled to go on sale starting April 16, 2026, in both Sony E‑mount and L‑Mount versions.
