Sony A7R VI Officially Announced with 66.8MP Stacked Sensor and Major Platform Redesign
Sony has officially taken the wraps off the A7R VI (ILCE‑7RM6), the sixth‑generation high‑resolution Alpha body and one of the most anticipated cameras of 2026. Announced on May 13, the A7R VI is built around an all‑new 66.8MP back‑illuminated fully stacked Exmor RS sensor, and represents the most significant redesign in the history of the R‑series.
A new sensor, a new platform
The headline number is 66.8 megapixels, but the architecture matters more than the count. This is a fully stacked CMOS sensor, with DRAM layered directly behind the pixel array. Sony states that readout is 5.6 times faster than the A7R V, enabling 30fps blackout‑free continuous shooting, dramatically reduced rolling shutter, and a pre‑capture buffer that records frames before the shutter is fully pressed.
Sony also confirmed during the launch event that the A7R VI introduces sensor‑level Dual Gain for the first time in the R‑series. This dual‑base ISO design improves noise performance at both low and high sensitivities, giving the camera more flexibility in challenging lighting.
Video takes a major step forward
Sony has significantly expanded the video capabilities of the R‑series. The A7R VI records 8K at 30p in 10‑bit 4:2:2, and 4K at up to 120p for high‑frame‑rate capture. All 8K modes are oversampled from the full sensor width. Rolling shutter is substantially reduced thanks to the stacked architecture. S‑Log3 and S‑Cinetone are included, and 16‑bit RAW output is available over HDMI.
These upgrades make the A7R VI the first R‑series body that can genuinely serve as a hybrid stills and video platform.
Redesigned body, menu, and battery
Sony emphasized during the presentation that the A7R VI uses an all‑new chassis, with improved ergonomics, a deeper grip, and better thermal performance. The menu system has been completely redesigned, addressing long‑standing usability complaints and improving navigation speed.
The camera also debuts a new battery platform, the NP‑SA100, replacing the NP‑FZ100 used since 2017. The new battery offers higher capacity and improved heat management to support the stacked sensor’s power demands.
The EVF has been upgraded to a 9.44‑million‑dot Quad‑XGA OLED with 0.90× magnification. Sony stated during the launch that this viewfinder surpasses the A1 Mark II, making it the highest‑quality EVF ever fitted to an Alpha camera.
Autofocus
The A7R VI uses Sony’s latest AI‑based Real‑time Recognition AF+, powered by a dedicated AI processing unit. It recognizes humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and aircraft, with improved tracking reliability in low‑contrast and backlit scenes. The AF system uses 759 phase‑detection points across stills and video.
Image stabilization
The A7R VI features Sony’s most advanced IBIS system to date.
Official CIPA 2024 measurements:
- 8.5 stops (center)
- 7.0 stops (periphery)
This is the strongest stabilization performance ever offered in a Sony full‑frame camera.
