The Nikon ZR cinema camera is set to be officially unveiled on September 10, 2025.
The ZR will be Nikon’s first camera designed specifically for video production. It represents Nikon’s first major integration of RED’s cinema technology into its Z-mount system since acquiring the company.
A standout feature of the Nikon ZR is its deep integration of RED’s patented technologies. Not only does it share the same sensor as the Z6 III, but it also incorporates RED’s IPP2 (Image Processing Pipeline 2). Known for exceptional critical color management, improved shadow detail, smoother highlight roll-off, and more accurate mid-tone reproduction, IPP2 significantly enhances the ZR’s color accuracy, dynamic range, and post-production flexibility. The ZR will also support the next-generation Nikon N-Log (N-Log2) and REDCODE RAW formats, delivering enhanced dynamic range in 4K video recording.
The Nikon ZR adopts a modular, box-style design tailored for professional use. It omits a traditional electronic viewfinder and instead features an extra-large LCD screen, clearly targeting video-centric creators. This design blends RED’s cinematic professionalism, the portability of the Sony FX3, and the user-friendly approach of the Nikon Z30—all aimed at improving the hands-on filmmaking experience.
Positioned not as a high-end RED competitor but as a more accessible tool for filmmakers and enthusiasts, the ZR is expected to be priced between $2,799 and $3,499—far more affordable than traditional RED cameras, which often cost tens of thousands of dollars. It aims to serve the growing market of independent creators, offering a portable and cost-effective cinema solution that bridges the gap between prosumer and professional video production.
The launch of the Nikon ZR marks a major advancement for Nikon in the video domain. As September 10 approaches, anticipation continues to build for this RED-infused cinema camera. We will closely follow and share the latest updates upon its release.
