FreeFly Systems has joined the L-Mount Alliance as its 11th member. The announcement, made through an official press release from Leica Camera AG dated April 16, 2026, allows FreeFly to develop products using the L-Mount standard for future cameras and accessories.

FreeFly is best known for building high-speed cinema cameras and rugged drones used in professional production environments. The company’s product lineup includes the FreeFly Move, a compact cine camera, and various stabilized aerial platforms used in everything from Hollywood film sets to live sports broadcasts.

What this means for the L-Mount ecosystem

The L-Mount Alliance was founded in 2018 by Leica Camera AG, Sigma, and Panasonic. Its goal was to create an open standard that allows lenses and cameras from different manufacturers to work together without adapters or functional limitations. Today, the alliance covers more than 20 cameras and over 134 lenses.

With FreeFly on board, the alliance gains a company that builds both cameras and movement systems. That combination opens up new possibilities for integrating L-Mount glass with professional cinema and aerial rigs. FreeFly CEO Tabb Firchau framed it directly: “The L-Mount allows us to interface with a wide range of beautiful lenses that are small, light, and feature advanced electronics that enable exciting electronic control options from the camera.”

Quotes from both sides

Valentino Di Leonardo, Managing Expert Technology & Licensing at Leica Camera AG, welcomed the new member: “With Freefly joining the alliance, we are welcoming a partner with a strong reputation in camera movement systems and aerial cinematography. Their expertise opens up new creative possibilities within the L-Mount ecosystem, particularly for professional film and high-end production workflows.”

Firchau added a more adventurous note: “We look forward to contributing to the Alliance and hope to put L-Mount lenses in places the world has not seen them before, from rocket launches to fighting forest fires.”

FreeFly makes 11

FreeFly becomes the 11th company to join the L-Mount Alliance. The current full list includes founding members Leica Camera AG, Sigma, and Panasonic, along with Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GmbH, DJI, ASTRODESIGN, Samyang Optics, Blackmagic Design, Sirui, Viltrox, and now FreeFly Systems.

The bigger picture

This membership signals that the L-Mount is being treated as more than just a still photography standard. The addition of Blackmagic Design last year, followed by FreeFly this year, points to a deliberate push into professional cinema and high-end video production. For photographers and filmmakers using L-Mount gear, that means more options for specialized lenses and camera bodies designed for moving images.
