Today, Canon has announced the RF 85mm F1.4 L VCM, the latest addition to its lineup of voice coil motor (VCM) autofocus lenses. The VCM system uses magnets surrounding a coil of wire to deliver highly responsive, virtually silent autofocus performance, making it well-suited for both still photography and video production.
The RF 85mm F1.4 L VCM completes Canon’s standard series of f/1.4 VCM prime lenses, joining the existing 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm models.
As part of the L-series, the lens features full weather sealing, with dust- and water-resistant construction that includes seals around the control ring, focus ring, zoom ring, operation panel, and lens mount.
Its optical design incorporates one UD element and one aspherical element to enhance image quality, along with Canon’s Air Sphere Coating (ASC) to reduce ghosting. A fluorine coating on the front and rear elements helps resist smudges and makes cleaning easier.
